Camp Salmen Nature Park Reopens After Hurricane Zeta Cleanup

Camp Salmen Nature Park in the Slidell area will reopen at noon , Wednesday, November 4, 2020 after extensive cleanup from Hurricane Zeta. Parish Government asks that patrons please refrain from using areas that remain closed.

St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper announced on Tuesday, October  27, 2020 the official opening of the Tammany Trace Extension into Camp Salmen, as well as the new park hours --- seven days per week from 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  Read details here.

14th Annual President’s Arts Awards Slated for November 19th

St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper announced today that the 14th Annual President’s Arts Awards recipients will be honored at the President’s Arts Awards presented by the St. Tammany Commission on Cultural Affairs, Thursday, November 19, 2020, at an outdoor ceremony at the Koop Drive Trailhead Pavilion. Attendance will be limited to recipients and their families as COVID-19 protective protocol will be in place.

“We are happy to be able to host this event at the Koop Drive Trailhead. I want to thank the Commission for their hard work and their attention to every detail in keeping safety in mind in planning this event, for the honorees,” Cooper said. “The arts are a vital part of our community.  I look forward to celebrating my first Arts Awards as Parish President and recognizing the wealth of artistic talent here in St. Tammany. I offer sincere congratulations to every recipient.”

The honorees are as follows:

Ochsner Health Systems Community COVID-19 Testing in Slidell Underway this Week

Ochsner Health System is offering Community COVID-19 testing this week from Tuesday, November 3, 2020 through Friday, November 6, 2020, at the Fritchie Park Gym, 905 W. Howze Beach Road, in Slidell, from 9 a.m. – 4p.m. COVID-19 testing is open to Louisiana residents, age two and older.

Members of the community who wish to be tested should bring an ID and insurance card, if applicable. There are no out-of-pocket costs for those seeking a test and no one will be turned away based on their insurance status. Testing is available at the times listed or until all test kits have been utilized. Testing schedules are subject to change due to weather.

Debris Pickup:

St. Tammany Parish Department of Public Works will continue picking up green, vegetative, storm-related debris in unincorporated areas of St. Tammany. Monday November 2, 2020. Citizens are asked to please place un-bagged, green, vegetative, storm-related debris by the roadside in the right-of-way for pick up — separate from regular garbage and recycling — by the Public Works Department. Public Works will not go onto private property so debris must be in the right-of-way. Green, vegetative debris mixed with construction and demolition debris will not be picked up.

Recreational Facilities

The Kids Konnection Playground located at 21410 Koop Dr, Mandeville is now open.

Northshore Beach located at 267 Debbie Dr, Slidell, LA 70458 is open.

The Tammany Trace is now open.

The Bayou Lacombe Bridge on the Tammany Trace is open to marine Traffic.

These facilities remain closed:

The St. Tammany Fishing Pier located at 54001 E Howze Beach Rd, Slidell, LA 70461

Damage Assessments and Reporting:

St. Tammany Parish Government inspectors have identified 550 homes that suffered some damage from hurricane ZETA. The majority of the homes are located in the south Slidell area.

Public Works

73 Parish-maintained roads, and 10 state highways had downed trees and /or power lines throughout Hurricane Zeta. Utility crews are still working approximately 15-20 Parish-maintained roads.

As of midday, Friday, October 30, 2020 Public Works crews hauled more than 475 cubic yards of vegetative debris to disposal sites.

Public works continues to clear debris from roadways.

The Bayou Lacombe drawbridge on the Tammany Trace is now open to marine traffic and bathroom facilities at the Lacombe trailhead are open.

These facilities remain completely closed:

  • Camp Salmen Nature park, located at 35122 Parish Pkwy, Slidell, LA 70460
  • The St. Tammany Fishing Pier located at 54001 E Howze Beach Rd, Slidell, LA 70461

St. Tammany Parish Government appreciates the patience of citizens as we work to restore facilities to pre-storm condition.

Residents are advised to call places of business before heading out to them to determine if they are open, and to determine if they are accepting all forms of payment or cash-only.

The Tammany Trace is now open from the Slidell Trailhead to Dove Park in Mandeville. The Lacombe drawbridge remains closed to marine traffic and there are no bathroom facilities at the Lacombe trailhead as power has not yet been restored.

These facilities remain completely closed:

  • Camp Salmen Nature park, located at 35122 Parish Pkwy, Slidell, LA 70460
  • The St. Tammany Fishing Pier located at 54001 E Howze Beach Rd, Slidell, LA 70461
  • Bayou Lacombe Bridge. No Marine traffic.
