St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper Declares State of Emergency in Advance of Tropical Storms Marco and Laura

St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper has declared a State of Emergency in advance of Tropical Strom Marco and Tropical Storm Laura. He asks residents to prepare for these storms. Marco is forecast by the National Weather Service to impact St. Tammany late Monday. Laura is forecast to impact St. Tammany later this week.

“We will first feel the effects of Marco, and then later in the week, possibly Laura. We ask all residents to be prepared for a heavy rain event and storm surge, check on elderly family and neighbors, and have enough supplies to shelter in place for the duration of the storm,” said Mike Cooper, St. Tammany Parish President. “We are prepared, and we want our residents to be prepared as well.”

He made several announcements during a media briefing earlier today, Sunday, August 23, 2020.

-Non-essential Parish Government Offices will close Monday, August 24, 2020 essential personnel is expected to report as assigned. The Department of Animal Services will be closed to the public.

-The St. Tammany Parish Emergency Operations Center will activate at 7 p.m. this evening. (Sunday, August 23, 2020)

-The St. Tammany Parish Department of Public Works is monitoring six self-serve sandbag stations today, Sunday, August 23, 2020. There will be someone to assist the elderly at each location.

-Beginning Monday, August 24, 2020 The Department of Public Works will be distributing sandbags at five of these locations beginning at 8a.m. until weather no longer permits, or until 6 p.m.

-Northshore Beach has been closed to the public.

-Other recreational venues also closing at 3p.m. today:
- Tammany Trace
- Camp Salmen

- Bayou Lacombe Bridge closes at 3p.m. today. No Marine traffic

STAR TRANSIT will not run until after the storm has passed and road conditions are reassessed.

Coastal Environmental is suspending recycling this week. Garbage pickup is expected however, the schedule may change.

-All 22nd JDC courts are closed from Monday, August 24 through Wednesday, August 26, 2020.

-The St. Tammany Parish Clerk of Courts Office are closed from Monday, August 24 through Wednesday, August 26, 2020.

-Public works has contacted debris and monitoring contractors and they are on standby/monitoring potential impacts.

-Public Works and Tammany Utilities personnel are on call, if needed, out of an abundance of caution.

-Citizens can call 985-809-2300 for storm updates.

-Updates will be posted at www.stpgov.org, on STPG-TV; Channel 710 (Spectrum) Channel 99 AT&T U-Verse, as well as on Social Media.

Residents are asked to clear any debris from culverts and drainage pathways, and to monitor the weather forecasts in the coming days through your local media outlets. Prepare your enhanced plan to accommodate COVID-19 precautions.
