We received this notice from LaDOTD this morning:  CANCELLED – 12/30/09    December 29, 2009 I-12, St. Tammany Parish, Lane Closure, S.P. No. 454-04-0038 Westbound and Eastbound I-12 in St. Tammany Parish near milepost 68.53, between the LA 59 and LA 434 exits – the inside/left lane will be closed Wednesday Night, January 6, 2010 to Thursday Morning, January 7, 2010.  The contractor may work Wednesday Night through Thursday morning, 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. while crews install temporary striping (weather permitting). Permit/Detour Section This closure will reduce the travel lanes from 12 feet to 11 feet.  During the nightly construction, one lane will be open to traffic at all times, however, to avoid the lane closure, westbound motorists may take I-12 to LA 434 (Lacombe), South on LA 434 to US 190, West on US 190 to I-12.  Safety Reminder DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment....

  District 9 Community Meeting     St. Tammany Parish District 9 Councilman Gene Bellisario will host a community meeting on Tuesday, January 5th.  The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m., in the cafeteria of Boyet Jr. High School, on Rebel Drive (off Pearl St., off E. Tchefuncte Interchange Receives Award                 The recently opened Interstate 12 Tchefuncte Interchange in Covington received an “Award of Merit” for excellence in design and construction from McGraw Hill Construction.  The award fell under the transportation category for the southern region, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama.  Only one other “Award of Merit” was received in the southern region.               Richard Price Contracting Co., LLC, Richard C. Lambert Consultants, LLC, the Louisiana DOTD and the St. Tammany Department of Engineering were all involved in the completion of the project.  This interchange was one of the first to be built on Interstate 12 in St. Tammany Parish since the original completion of the interstate.  McGraw Hill Construction presents the awards each year to recognize construction projects throughout the United States.               “We are pleased our new interchange received this recognition,” said Parish President Kevin Davis.  “This speaks to the excellence of all the partners involved, from the design, construction, and parish and state levels.” ...

Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program                   The annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program is taking place in St. Tammany Parish.  Starting Wednesday, December 30, citizens may drop off their discarded Christmas trees at two locations in St. Tammany: in Covington, at the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds Florida Street (East) Entrance, and in Slidell, at the Slidell Parish Complex on Military Road just north of Brownswitch Road.               Citizens may also call their individual waste haulers for information on tree pick up dates.  Look at your bill to determine your waste hauler and phone number.  All trees are used for marsh restoration as part of an ongoing project with the St. Tammany Parish Department of Engineering and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority. ...

President’s Arts Awards                   St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis and the St. Tammany Commission on Cultural Affairs are presenting the 5th Annual President’s Arts Awards at the Louisiana Medical Center and Heart Hospital on January 15, 2010 from 6 PM to 8 PM. New Art Program on Access St. Tammany     This month, the St. Tammany Parish Commission on Cultural Affairs introduces “artSPARK”, a new program on Access St. Tammany Channel 10. This program is all about the process of making art of all disciplines.  From visual arts, music, culinary, literary, and the performing arts, artSPARK takes you into artists’ studios as they share how they do what they do.   The first artist in the series is master ceramist Dennis Sipiorski, demonstrating wheel thrown pottery from his Covington studio. Sipiorski is chair of the Visual Arts Department at Southeastern Louisiana University.   The show airs throughout the month of December on Mondays from 7PM to 8PM and Wednesdays from 6PM to 7PM. It will begin airing on Monday, December 14.  Access St. Tammany can be seen on Charter Cable Channel 10 or streaming live at www.stpgov.org.       ...

Holiday of Lights                 Due to impending weather, the St. Tammany Parish Holiday of Lights celebration at Koop Drive in Mandeville scheduled for this evening has been cancelled. Public Meeting for Hwy 190 Widening                 There will be a public meeting on December 16th for the public to give input on the feasibility of a project to widen Highway 190 between Hwy 11 in Slidell and the Mandeville area.  The meeting will be held at the Lacombe Community Center in John Davis Park on 12th Street at 6:00 PM.               The Louisiana DOTD and a consulting firm are working to determine the feasibility of the project and gather public input.  ...

Highway 21 Resurfacing Update                 Due to the incoming cold front, workers will be laying the wearing course on Highway 21 in Covington in the Interstate 12 to Bootlegger Road area today, Wednesday, December 09, 2009 and tomorrow, Thursday December 10, 2009.  The work will begin at 1:00 PM today (Wed) and will begin at 9:00 AM tomorrow (Thurs).   The Northbound lanes will be completed first, with one lane blocked for work and the other open for traffic. The Southbound lanes will be completed second.  There will be workers directing traffic during the process in both directions.  Weather permitting, the wearing course in both lanes in both directions should be ready for striping after these two days of work.               The work was originally scheduled to be done at night, but the wearing course cannot be laid in cold temperatures. To facilitate the timely completion of the project, the work will be done today and tomorrow.  The wearing course is the final layer of road which will be striped.                ...

Sandbag Locations Open   Due to the amount of rain received overnight and continuing to fall, St. Tammany Parish has opened the following sandbag locations:   Covington Barn (Covington Fairgrounds) 1305 N. 2009 Holiday of Lights Update       Parish President Kevin Davis will hold the official opening ceremonies for the 2009 Holiday of Lights on Friday, December 11th at 6:00 PM.   Musical entertainment is provided on Friday and Saturday, December 11th and 12th from 6PM to 9PM.  The Kids Konnection playground is open until 8:30 PM, and is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Rumor has it that Santa will be present as well. The lighted display is turned on at dusk and will remain lit until 9PM nightly up to January 2nd.   All performances at the Holiday of Lights are broadcast live on Access St. Tammany, Charter Cable Channel 10 and web streamed at www.stpgov.org.   For more information on the Holiday of Lights, call the Tammany Trace at (985) 867-9490.   ...

2009 Holiday of Lights Update     Due to the weather forecast, St. Tammany Parish and the Tammany Trace Foundation will postpone tomorrow night’s opening ceremonies for the 2009 Holiday of Lights.  The Holiday of Lights is St. Tammany Parish’s free annual celebration of the holiday season, featuring the Tower of Lights, musical performers and rides.   Because of the cancellation of the 4th, schools and other performers are being asked to reschedule their performances to the new date of Thursday, December 10th.  Weather permitting, the Holiday of Lights celebration will be open this Saturday, December 5th.  Parish President Kevin Davis will hold the official opening ceremonies next Friday, December 11th at 6:00 PM.   All performances at the Holiday of Lights, including the new date of Thursday, December 10th, are broadcast live on Access St. Tammany, Charter Cable Channel 10 and web streamed at www.stpgov.org.   The celebration is now scheduled to be open Saturday, December 5, Thursday, December 10th through Saturday, December 12 from 6PM to 9PM.  The Kids Konnection playground is open and musical entertainment is provided each night.  Rumor has it that Santa will be present as well.   For more information on the Holiday of Lights, call the Tammany Trace at (985) 867-9490.   ...
