Maureen O’Brien has resided in St. Tammany for 17 years. Maureen was born and raised in Larose, Louisiana in lower Lafourche Parish. She attended Nicholls State University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education (3.5 GPA) and a Master of Education degree in Administration and Supervision (4.0 GPA). While attending Nicholls State, Maureen was named as an Outstanding Young Woman of America recipient for academic excellence and achievements.
Maureen began her professional career as an educator, teaching in several Louisiana parishes. She taught at public, private and Christian schools for almost two decades. Since 2007 Maureen has worked in business doing training, Human Resources and Public Relations and has also worked as the Retired Senior Volunteer Program director for St. Tammany Parish at Volunteers of America’s Northshore Services. She has served on the St. Tammany West Chamber of Commerce Small Business Advisory Council and is currently on the Workforce Investment Board for St. Tammany, St. Bernard and Plaquemine’s Parish.
Maureen was elected in the fall of 2011 as the St. Tammany Parish Councilwoman representing District 10. In the spring of 2012, she was elected to the St. Tammany Republican Party Executive Committee, also representing District 10, and chaired the Organizational Committee which was responsible for campaign headquarters in the parish. She is also on the Executive Committee of the Northshore Tea Party, is a member of Church of the King, a non-denominational church in Mandeville, and a lifelong Republican. Maureen is also a member of the Republican Professional Women of St. Tammany and the Three Rivers Art Festival Board. She is a member of the 2013 class of the Leadership St. Tammany Program and was nominated for 2012 Woman of the Year by the Professional Women of St. Tammany and the 2014 Alliance for Good Government Legislator of the Year Award. Parish President Pat Brister also selected Maureen to serve on the Community Action Advisory Council for St. Tammany Parish. She has previously been on the board of the Christian Women’s Connection, a non-denominational ministry. A strong fiscal conservative, O’Brien wants honest, ethical government and more transparency. She firmly believes that the public should have open access to the business of government.
Maureen was also a radio talk show host, creating The MO Show, which aired from New Orleans, and ran from December of 2011 through 2013. The goal of the show was to inform the public about Northshore and Regional issues. The show covered government, politics, business, sports, local talent and community events. Her desire was, and is, to keep people informed, hoping to get more people involved in government, and present the best of St. Tammany and our region.
MO’s favorite job is as mom to her two grown boys, Michael IV and Matthew. Michael is a graduate of Southeastern University; he lives and works, as a general manager, in St. Tammany. Matthew is a graduate of BAMA, and is working on a doctorate in robotics at Georgia Tech.
