St. tammany Parish council

The St. Tammany Parish Council is the legislative arm of St. Tammany Parish Government. The fourteen members of the Council, as a branch of Parish Government, have the right, power and authority to pass ordinances covering several areas including preserving the general welfare, safety, health, peace and good order of the parish and the management of Parish affairs. The Parish Council is bound by the constitution and laws applicable to Parish government.

Jerry Binder was elected to the St. Tammany Parish Council in 2004 and was Council Vice-Chairman in 2005. Previously, he served as a councilman on the Slidell City Council from 1998-2004. In 2000 and 2003, Jerry was President of the City Council and in 1999 and 2002 he was Vice-President.

He is a graduate of St. Aloysius High School in New Orleans, LA. In 1972, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing from Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Jerry moved to Slidell in1975 and is employed as Branch Manager of ThyssenKrupp Elevator Company for South Louisiana and South Mississippi.

Jerry served in the United States Naval Reserve from 1970-1976. He was a member of the Slidell Police Civil Service Board from 1991-1993. In 1996 he served as president of the Slidell Youth Basketball Association and served as a member of the Board of Directors of that association from 1994-1998. Jerry is also a member of the Northshore Republican Men’s Club, Sons of Italy-Slidell Chapter, STARC, the Knights of Columbus-Council 2732, and the Our Lady of Lourdes Men’s Club.

Jerry’s interest and decision to get involved in public service was generated from numerous desires he wished to fulfill within local government, including: to help maintain the quality of life in St. Tammany Parish, to be responsive to the needs of our citizens and community, help maintain integrity in government, be available to the people to allow discussions on important issues and concerns, assist our community to continue to prosper, and ensure that economic development takes hold within the parish to promote and provide jobs for our citizens and young people.

Jerry has strived to promote communication and cooperation between the City of Slidell and St. Tammany Parish Government. He has been an advocate of recreational improvements, and was instrumental in the building of the Fritchie Park Gymnasium, the Oak Harbor Bike Path, and various neighborhood playgrounds. Jerry initiated Parish Council legislation to allow improved tracking systems for violent sex offenders, legislation prohibiting illegitimate pain clinics within St. Tammany Parish, and he has successfully implemented numerous road and drainage improvements throughout District 12.
